Tablecloths, balloons, dresses and ties – all a sea of red. Over 100 Staten Island entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals gathered for the ‘Wear Red’ Launch Party, at Bistro on February 1st, 2012.
The event, hosted by the Women’s Business Committee of the West Brighton Community LDC, (WBCLDC), had a two-fold message: heart health awareness and kick-off for the 8th Annual Business Woman Conference, a signature program of WBCLDC’s Business Outreach Center of Staten Island.
WBCLDC and its Women’s Business Committee focuses on creating an environment that allows entrepenuers and small businesses, especially women, to excell. The Annual Business Woman conference will be held on June 20th and for the first time wil be an all-day event, with the addition of the Joanne Regan Memorial Entrepenuer Awards Program & Reception.
WEAR RED EVENT:
The ‘Wear Red” Launch Party succeeded in raising awareness and funds for both WBCLDC and the SI Heart Society. A heart healthy buffet was enjoyed as well as dessert donated by Edible Arrangements of Hylan Blvd and Victory blvd
Speakers included: Tony Books Aviles of Staten Island Bootcamp, who spoke about the SI Slimdown Challenge. He is a member of the WBCLDC’s Netpenuer group and a past client of our former Business development Specialist, Joann Reagan, of WBCLDC.
Dr.Motivala of Staten Island Physicians spoke on the importance of heart health. He is a cardiologist and spoke on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This includes moderate exercise, stress reduction and a healthy diet.
Fran Reali of the Frank J. Reali III Family Foundationspoke about the need for echo cardiograms and awareness for baseline heart screening among youth. http://www.frankjrealiiiifamilyfoundation.org/

The West Brighton Community LDC’s Business Outreach Center of S.I. hosts Staten Island’s only woman’s business conference, catering to professionals, seasoned and new small business owners. As a SBA, federally designated, Women’s business center and NYC designated Minority and Woman Enterprise Leadership Association, WBCLDC is positioned to serve the needs of small businesses and professionals. As part of the Business Outreach Center Network, 3,000 NY metro area small businesses and entrepreneurs are reached annually.
The Staten Heart Society works locally to promote heart health. February is Heart Health Awareness month and heart disease is the highest killer of women every year, before cancer. Women are less likely to see the signs of heart disease.
The Women’s Network promotes woman-owned businesses and raises awareness of important local causes, including the Staten Island Heart Society, which received a donation from a portion of the proceeds of the Wear Red event. The Wear red event also raised funds which support WBCLDC’s free and low cost business education , career development and business assistance programs to Staten Island businesses and entrpenuers. This also supports, community programs such as, a new initiative,’Suit Up & Succeed”, which assists unemployed men, women and youth. Other local organizations which WBCLDC’s Womn’s Business Committee has partnered with include, the Children’s Blood Cord Bank, SI University Hospital and RUMC.
Monthly networking events included: Toni’s Closet and HandPicked Creations Boutique. WBCLDC has hosted monthly women’s business networking events which promotes and assists woman-owned businesses and provides assistance to Staten Island small businesses. March’s event will be at Paulo Financial, owned by Catherine Paulo, financial planner.
